How Do You Really Define Self-Care?

Self-care is necessary for your mental health regime. Regular self-care can help you feel better about yourself and lessen the harmful effects of chronic stress on your mind and body. Although stress is a natural part of life, we should learn how to cope in a healthy manner and create a balance. But, how do you really define self-care? How do you know when you are taking care of your mind, body, and soul?



Here are some signs that you are actually doing self-care:



You set your boundaries and know your limits.


Self-care entails avoiding triggers and allowing yourself to say no to things that deplete you physically or emotionally. This can be used in your professional life, personal life, relationships, and leisure activities.


It's crucial to have supportive people who understand your limitations and constraints. If people in your life don't always wish you well or make you feel bad about yourself, it's probably time to rethink your connections.


You engage in healthy activities instead of self-destructing when you are stressed or overwhelmed.


Life can be loud sometimes, to the point wherein you cannot hear your own thoughts and think clearly. The things you do to take a break from these define if you are taking care of yourself. Here are some things you can do when you feel this way:


  • Take a nap

  • Listen to your favorite song

  • Meditate

  • Write in your journal

  • Schedule a spa

  • Play with your pet

  • Draw or paint

  • See the nature

  • Hang out with family or friends


You do the things that you love.

There is a wide choice of relaxing hobbies to choose from. If you haven't figured out yours yet, try to focus on things that you don't usually feel drained, tired, or stressed after you do it. Doing things that you enjoy can help improve your mental health.


You pay attention to your physical health.


Your physical health is a big impact on your overall mental health. When you maintain to get adequate sleep every night, eat healthily, and exercise regularly, you also have a higher chance of having stable mental health and better well-being. When you focus on these things and integrate them into your daily routine, your body will feel healthier and improve your self-esteem.


  • Include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish, seafood, lean meats, and a small quantity of dairy in your diet.

  • Aim to get enough sleep every night. Rest at least 7 hours a night for adults.

  • Exercise daily. Make it a goal to work out at least 30 minutes a day.

  • Drink enough water. The recommended water intake for men is 3.7 liters and for women is 2.7 liters.
